Mercedes-Benz E-class W123

Mercedes-Benz W123 — family of the German cars of a segment E on the European classification (business class), was made in 1976 — 1984. The W123 family succeeded the W114/W115 family. In 1984 the W123 family gave way in a model range of Mercedes-Benz to the E-class W124 family.

To the middle of the 1970th cars a stroke 8 morally became outdated. Demanded to start the new car in a post-crisis situation courage, and the new car had to answer with the best expectation of quality. In December of the 1975th year such car appeared, from the predecessor only the body form, inside all knots and units was borrowed (including vacuum brakes) were new, and the styling was based on W116 m a S-class.

The first cars were six-cylinder 280 and 280E, but in the 1976th year bulk joined them: 200, 230, 200D, 220D, 240D (R4); 300D (P5) and 250, 280 (R6). In the 1977th year appeared a compartment of C123 in models 230C, 280C and 280CE, and also only for the market of the USA 300CD. And in the 1978th year, there was one more novelty if earlier versatile persons were issued the company on special-orders, then beginning from S123, the versatile person became constants of a model range. The model range was from petrol 230T, 250T, 280TE, and diesel 240TD and 300TD. In 1979/80 the car is exposed to the first updating. Besides cosmetic updates there were replacements of several engines on more powerful and pure. The first of them 200, replaced the beginning model and got up on the station wagon 200T. Followed them injector 230E, 230CE and 230TE which replaced carburetor 230, 230T and 230S. Also in the 1980/81st production carburetor 280 and 280S was phased down. For diesel models production 220D was phased down, but in exchange there was version 300D with a turbo-supercharging, for the versatile person (300TD, 1980) and then and for the sedan and a compartment (1981) in the beginning. The last replaced 300CD and was available only in the USA. In the 1982nd year the car had a powerful competitor, Mercedes having risked huge amounts of money started the new compact W201 (190) sedan which was presented as a cheap alternative. Success was instant, but thereby he responded in recession of sales of 123 models at once. Therefore in September one more updating was the 1982nd, but production began to be phased down, the last descended from the conveyor in January, 1984. In only 8 years 2.696.915 W123 cars, including 99.884 compartments and 199.517 versatile persons, besides a set of special-series were constructed. From them about 1.080.000 it was exported to the USA, Japan, the countries of the Middle East where to this day they the frequent phenomenon on streets. Many consider W123 one of the most reliable cars for all history of brand.

The W123 series was officially presented in January, 1976 by models 200, 230, 250, 280 and 280E with petrol motors, and also 200D, 220D, 240D and 300D with diesel. In March, 1977 at the Geneva motor show compartments of models 230C, 280C and 280CE were presented. In total compartments are equipped with rectangular headlights at once, and panels of salon get off with a wood root. The compartment had no average rack and a frame of glasses that did them almost by cabriolets. The original design in the form of small "flow" of the line of doors was applied to seat belts (the same decision was applied also in a compartment of the W126 series later). In the fall of the same year models with a body "station wagon" (series T) — 240TD, 300TD, 230T, 250T and 280TE are presented at the Frankfurt exhibition. The next updating of models takes place in September, 1979. All models receive a new steering wheel (as on the new W126 model), new materials of finishing of salon (MB-Tex became more similar appearance to skin), new head restraints (the smaller size), new colors of coloring of a body, in the dashboard triangular indicators of repeaters of turn are replaced with strelochka. All models are regularly equipped with seat belts for back passengers, for all models the adjustable back suspension bracket is offered. Also all models are regularly equipped with pneumatic adjustment of provision of headlights. In a compartment instead of a wood root in finishing appears "zebrano". In 1978 the gain of power was received model 280E (on 8 h.p.), 240D (on 7 h.p.) and 300D (on 8 h.p.). Following 1979 by 5 h.p. the power of diesel model 200D (and the release of model 220D stops) and increases by 11 h.p. of petrol model 250. In June, 1980 there is a large updating of motors: model 200 receives the new 2-liter M102 motor, other modification of this 2,3 l motor is established on new model 230E (carburetor model 230 with the M115 motor is laid off). In 1981 carburetor model 280 is laid off, in production scale remains only 280E with an injector. The next large updating of models takes place in September, 1982. Little changes happen up to 1984. So, in 1984 locks of seat belts change, the type of luggage grids in backs of front seats changes. In 1984 at will it was possible to install also the catalyst, however the real application was not found for this innovation — too little still was gas stations with unleaded gasoline. A series 123 was issued until the end of 1984, having given way to the new W124 series. Success of W123 was unconditional — in 8 years more than 2,7 million cars in different executions were produced. The Mercedes Benz W123 confirmed reputation of the comfortable reliable car "for every day". Many of that 123rd which we see on streets now already celebrated the 30 anniversary, others approach this boundary. Despite solid age, they also quickly "run" but to streets, being really "working horses". They did not become "classics" yet, but by right are considered as those.
